5 Gardening Tasks for June
It's June, and that means summer is just 19 days away! Here are 5 tasks to help keep your garden on the right track!
Although June is usually the driest month, do NOT overwater. Water slowly and deeply, about 6 inches. Because the temperatures can be so high, water early in the morning before the sun, or late in the evening when the sun is going down.
Speaking of watering, apply a 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch around the roots of your plants. The mulch will help retain moisture to conserve water during the dry, summer months.
Plant summer annual flowers, such as marigolds, to bring color to your garden, attract pollinators, and to guard against veggie plant pests.
Prune faded or dead leaves/ flowers from your plants to encourage new growth and increase potential harvest.
Be on high alert for insect pests and diseases. These include, but are not limited to, aphids, cabbage worms, cutworms, snails/slugs, leaf spot, and mildew. If you find any of these, try introducing ladybugs into your garden as a beneficial insect for the pests. Organic mixtures like milk (30%) and water (70%) help treat plant diseases.
